  • Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) is an advocate for Design Thinking and has set up the Institute of Design Thinking (IDK) to serve as a learning platform, offering specialized training on the topics of innovation, design management, and creative leadership. We partnered with them and local Startup, Press Start Hong Kong, to design Divergence, a first of its kind game kit for people to quickly learn and understand the process of Design Thinking, that equips them with the knowledge of identifying key points of a problem, and come up with innovative yet comprehensive user-centric solutions in a gamified way. Bearing in mind that Divergence is a hands-on game, design ed to be finished in 1.5 hours for 3-6 players, we carefully sort through how the players could be connected with the game through touch and visual stimulations. The game is packaged in a soft string bag with eye-catching herringbone patterns, with the game kit box contrastingly designed in plain grey. But once the box is opened, the players would quickly find the colourful deck of cards inside printed with abstract illustrations, with each card designed to give visual prompts to enable the players to unleash their creativity in an astounding manner. We also designed the card sizes that can be handled easily by the majority in the demographic. They are laminated with matte plastic coating, able to enhance readability, card sturdiness yet soft to touch, but also increase playability as the cards do not stick together when they are stacked or being distributed during play. The game manual is deliberately printed on textured paper, so as to set apart from the game cards with a different look and feel when being held. To further extend the branding of Divergence, we implemented the visuals onto the eyecatching prints for the game kit, including traditional prints of posters and leafle ts, to serve as stimulations and a connection point with the general public. They could catch a glimpse of how the game works and arouse their interest to find out more. The leaflets are printed on rainbow holographic paper to generate a 3D visual effect in the background, as a way to echo how the game could help generate extraordinary inspiring ideas. We ensure to create different levels of look and feel to the entire game kit, to generate a broader touch point with the general public from offline to online. The physical kit comes with a set of collectibles, including embroidered badges and shiny stickers, to reverberate the connectio ns between the players and Design Thinking even long after the game has finished. Besides two supporting videos , we have also designed a series of GIFs that can be easily shared on online social media platforms. The game kit is free of charge and can be obtained through arranging a Divergence Design Thinking workshop with IDK, and a downloadable version is also available from their website.
